The Colorado Fetal Care Center offers comprehensive fetal and maternal care for women facing a pregnancy with a known fetal anomaly. We treat the breadth of fetal conditions, from twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) and congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), to gastroschisis and myelomeningocele repair (spina bifida repair).
Our team of top fetal surgeons, physicians and experts in maternal fetal medicine, fetal surgery and pediatric subspecialties are part of the Colorado Institute for Maternal and Fetal Health, a partnership between Children’s Hospital Colorado, University of Colorado Hospital and University of Colorado School of Medicine.
The Colorado Fetal Care Center (CFCC) team provides obstetric and pediatric subspecialty consultation and a full spectrum of prenatal imaging, diagnostic capabilities and fetal treatment – from shunts and open fetal surgery, to fetoscopic surgery and Ex Utero Intrapartum Treatment (EXIT) procedures. The team is led by fetal surgeon and CFCC Director Dr. Timothy Crombleholme, who pioneered the first-ever EXIT procedure, which has helped the Center achieve some of the best outcomes for fetal conditions in the nation.
For women and families facing a fetal anomaly, the Colorado Fetal Care Center offers every fetal intervention procedure currently available, at one of the few comprehensive maternal and fetal care programs in the world.
This makes the Colorado Fetal Care Center (under the umbrella of the Colorado Institute for Maternal and Fetal Health) a national referral center for patients with the most complex or high-risk pregnancies.
Our fetal surgery team includes fetal and pediatric surgeons, MFM specialists, fetal and obstetric anesthesiologists, fetal cardiologists, Level III obstetrical nurses and an operating room fetal nursing team. This team has a dedicated facility at Children’s Colorado, which is equipped with state-of-the-art imaging and fetal surgery resources, and a specifically designed fetal surgery suite.

Once a fetal anomaly is detected, our patients receive a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, which may include prenatal ultrasound, fetal echocardiogram and a fetal MRI, along with diagnosis-specific subspecialty consultations. An interdisciplinary team of fetal-care experts reviews every aspect of the evaluation and prepares recommendations for a plan of care for the patient and her family.
The team meets with the mother and her family to review the findings, explain the implications and share their recommendations. Throughout our diagnostic and treatment process, we partner with referring providers and welcomes their involvement. In many cases, care of the pregnancy stays with the referring physician, and the team collaborates as a partner. This allows mothers to maintain their relationship with their primary OB or MFM.
Our Center integrates with all other programs within the Colorado Institute for Maternal Fetal Health (obstetrics, maternal fetal medicine, neonatology, and fetal cardiology), ensuring patients receive support from experts in every pediatric and adult medical subspecialty.
Its location on one of the country’s newest academic medical campuses (located just outside of Denver, Colorado) ensures that patients have access to the most advanced technological resources, and are supported by basic and clinical researchers. This unique combination of resources translates to advanced therapies and optimal outcomes.
